前置詞 + 関係代名詞

導入

関係代名詞は、前置詞の目的語になることがあります。

the house in which I live は「私が住んでいる家」、the person to whom I spoke は「私が話しかけた人」です。

この記事では、前置詞 + 関係代名詞の作り方、前置詞を後ろに残す形、関係副詞との書き換えを整理します。

基本

前置詞 + 関係代名詞の中心は、先行詞と前置詞の関係を明確にすることです。

I live in the house. の in the house が関係詞節に入ると、the house in which I live となります。

which は in の目的語です。

前置詞の直後では、人なら whom、物なら which を使います。that は前置詞の直後には置けません。

前置詞の目的語を関係代名詞にする

前置詞 + 名詞の名詞部分が先行詞になっているとき、前置詞 + 関係代名詞の形を作れます。

This is the house. I live in it. なら、it が the house を指すので This is the house in which I live. になります。

前置詞の直後は whom / which

前置詞の直後では、that や who ではなく whom / which を使います。

the man to whom I spoke は可能ですが、the man to who I spoke や the man to that I spoke は不可です。

前置詞を後ろに残すこともできる

前置詞は関係詞節の後ろに残すこともできます。この形は会話や普通の文でよく使われます。

the house in which I live は the house which I live in とも言えます。

目的格の which は省略され、the house I live in になることもあります。

判別のコツ

関係副詞に書き換えられることがある

in which, at which, on which などは、関係副詞 where / when に書き換えられることがあります。

the place in which I live は the place where I live、the day on which I met her は the day when I met her に近い意味です。

動詞・形容詞と前置詞の結びつきを見る

どの前置詞を使うかは、動詞や形容詞との結びつきで決まります。

listen to, look at, depend on, be proud of, be interested in など、熟語として必要な前置詞を落とさないようにします。

前置詞 + which がすべて関係副詞にできるわけではない

with which, by which, about which などは、where / when に単純に置き換えられないことが多いです。

the pen with which I wrote は「それで書いたペン」で、where にはできません。前置詞が場所・時・理由を表すかを確認します。
