読解のポイント

than / as の直後の did・be動詞・助動詞は倒置を疑う
than did S ／ as does S のように、than・as の後ろで助動詞や be 動詞が主語の前に出ることがあります（フォーマルな文体）。疑問文ではありません。

元の語順 than S did に戻して読む
than did the professor → than the professor did。主語を後ろから見つけて、普通の語順に戻すだけです。

この did は前の動詞の代用（代動詞）
did ＝ understood the problem。一般動詞「した」ではなく、繰り返しを避けるための代動詞です。中身を補って読みます。
