倍数・数量の比較

導入

倍数比較は、「2倍」「3倍」「半分」など、数量や程度の倍率を表す比較です。

This room is twice as large as mine. は「この部屋は私の部屋の2倍の広さだ」という意味です。

この記事では、twice as … as、three times as many/much as、twice the size of、比較級を使う倍数表現を整理します。

基本

倍数比較の中心は、基準となるものに対して何倍かを表すことです。

最も基本的で安全な形は、倍数 + as + 原級 + as です。

twice as large as、three times as expensive as のように使います。

数量名詞を比べる場合は as many + 複数名詞 as、as much + 不可算名詞 as を使います。

名詞の性質によって many / much を選びます。

倍数 + as + 原級 + as

倍数比較の基本は、倍数 + as + 原級 + as です。

twice は2倍、three times は3倍です。as と as の間は原級なので、twice as larger as とはしません。

as many / much as で数・量を比べる

数を比べるなら many、量を比べるなら much を使います。

books, students, questions のような複数名詞には many、water, money, information のような不可算名詞には much を使います。

twice the size / length / price of

倍数 + the + 名詞 + of でも倍率を表せます。

twice the size of mine は「私のものの2倍の大きさ」です。

名詞には size, length, width, height, price, population などがよく使われます。

判別のコツ

比較級を使う倍数表現は慎重に読む

three times larger than のように、倍数 + 比較級 + than の形も見られます。

ただし、厳密な倍率の読み方が曖昧になる場合があります。学校文法や入試では、three times as large as の形を基準にしたほうが安全です。

なお twice は比較級と組み合わせません。「2倍」は twice as large as / twice the size of で表します。

as much as は強調にもなる

as much as は数量比較だけでなく、「なんと〜も」という多さの強調にもなります。

The repairs cost as much as 100,000 yen. は「修理に10万円もかかった」です。

as many as も数の多さを強調できます。

分数・割合を使った比較

倍数だけでなく、half, one-third, two-thirds などの分数でも比較できます。

This box is half as heavy as that one. は「あの箱の半分の重さ」です。

The new model uses one-third as much energy as the old one. のような形もあります。
