最上級は、比較級や原級比較で書き換えられることがあります。
Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. は、Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan. や No other mountain in Japan is as high as Mt. Fuji. と近い意味になります。
この記事では、最上級・比較級・原級の書き換えを、比較対象の数と any other の使い方まで含めて整理します。

基本
最上級の書き換えの中心は、「一番」を別の形で表すことです。
A is the tallest. は、A is taller than all the others. とも、No other … is as tall as A. とも表せます。
ただし、A がその範囲に含まれる場合は any other を使います。
Tokyo is larger than any other city in Japan. の other は、Tokyo 自身を比較対象から外すために必要です。

最上級を比較級で表す
A が一番であることは、「A は他のどれよりも〜だ」と言い換えられます。
any other の後ろは単数名詞、all the other の後ろは複数名詞です。
any other mountains ではなく any other mountain にします。
最上級を原級で表す
No other … is as 原級 as A は、「A ほど〜なものはない」を表します。
No other student in the class is as tall as Ken. は、Ken is the tallest student in the class. と近い意味です。
any other の other を忘れない
A が比較範囲の中に含まれる場合、any other で A 自身を除きます。
Tokyo is larger than any city in Japan. とすると、東京自身も any city in Japan に含まれてしまい、「東京は東京より大きい」という矛盾を含みます。
Tokyo is larger than any other city in Japan. とします。
判別のコツ
範囲外との比較では other をつけない
比較対象が別の範囲にある場合は、other は不要です。
Tokyo is larger than any city in Canada. なら、東京はカナダの都市ではないので、any other city in Canada とはしません。
否定 + 比較級で最上級を表す
否定語と比較級を組み合わせると、最上級に近い意味になることがあります。
Nothing is more important than health. は「健康ほど大切なものはない」です。
I have never read a more interesting book. は「これほど面白い本を読んだことがない」です。
書き換えでは主語と範囲を保つ
書き換え問題では、意味の中心になる主語と範囲を保つことが重要です。
Ken is the tallest in his class. を比較級にするなら、Ken is taller than any other student in his class. です。
in his class を落とすと範囲が変わります。
