動名詞の重要構文

導入

動名詞には、構文としてまとまりで覚えるべき表現が多くあります。

cannot help doing, be worth doing, It is no use doing, There is no doing などは、直訳だけでは処理しにくい表現です。

この記事では、大学受験で頻出の動名詞構文を、意味と形の両方から整理します。

基本

動名詞の重要構文では、doing の前にある表現をまとまりで見ることが大切です。

be worth doing の doing は見た目は能動形ですが、意味は受動的になる点も重要です。

cannot help doing

cannot help doing は「〜せずにはいられない」です。help はここでは「避ける」に近い意味です。

I could not help laughing. は「笑わずにはいられなかった」という意味で、笑うのを止められなかったことを表します。

be worth doing

be worth doing は「〜する価値がある」です。

doing は能動形ですが、主語が doing の目的語になるため、日本語では受動的に訳すことがあります。

This book is worth reading. は「この本は読む価値がある」で、read の目的語は this book です。

being read にはしません。

It is no use / no good doing

It is no use doing と It is no good doing は「〜しても無駄だ」という意味です。

It is no use crying over spilt milk. はことわざ的な表現で、「覆水盆に返らず」に近い意味です。

判別のコツ

There is no doing

There is no doing は「〜することはできない」「〜する方法がない」という意味を表します。

There is no telling what will happen. は「何が起こるか分からない」という決まった形です。

feel like doing

feel like doing は「〜したい気がする」です。この like は前置詞なので、後ろには動名詞が来ます。

I feel like to go out. ではなく I feel like going out. です。

have difficulty / trouble doing

have difficulty doing は「〜するのに苦労する」です。

元は have difficulty in doing の in が省略された形と考えられます。

difficulty の後ろに to do を置かないように注意します。
