too … to do と enough to do は、不定詞構文の中でも入試頻出です。

This box is too heavy for me to carry. は「重すぎて運べない」、He is old enough to drive. は「運転できる年齢だ」という意味です。

基本

too … to do は「〜するにはあまりに…すぎる」、enough to do は「〜するのに十分…だ」を表します。

どちらも形容詞・副詞の程度と、不定詞で表す結果や可能性を結びつける構文です。

for A to do を入れる形

誰にとって難しい・重い・速いのかを示すときは、for A to do を使います。

This box is too heavy for me to carry. では、carry するのは me です。

enough to do

enough to do は「〜するのに十分…だ」という意味です。形容詞・副詞を修飾する enough は、その語の後ろに置きます。

He is old enough to drive. では、old enough の語順になります。enough old にはしません。

判別のコツ

目的語を重ねない

主語が不定詞の目的語になる場合、不定詞の後ろに it / them などを重ねません。

This problem is too difficult for me to solve it. ではなく、This problem is too difficult for me to solve. とします。

enough + 名詞 + to do

enough が名詞を修飾するときは、名詞の前に置きます。

I have enough money to buy the ticket. では、enough money の語順になります。

so … that への書き換え

too … to は so … that S cannot と書き換えられることがあります。

This box is too heavy for me to lift. は This box is so heavy that I cannot lift it. と近い意味になります。

目的語の扱いは、次の項で詳しく見ます。

書き換えでは目的語の復活に注意する

too … to や enough to の文では、不定詞の目的語が主語と同じものを指す場合、it / them を重ねません。

しかし so … that に書き換えると、that 節の中では目的語が必要になることがあります。

This book is easy enough for children to read. では read の後ろに it は置きません。

一方、This book is so easy that children can read it. では it が必要です。
