比較の重要表現

導入

比較には、more than や rather than のように、形は比較でも慣用的に意味が広がった表現が多くあります。

more than happy は「幸せ以上」ではなく「とても喜んで」、more A than B は「BというよりA」です。

この記事では、読解・整序・空所補充で狙われやすい比較の重要表現を整理します。

基本

比較表現の中心は、more / less / rather / other などが、単なる大小比較を超えて意味を作ることです。

more than は数量では「〜より多い」ですが、形容詞の前では「非常に」、名詞や節の前では「〜以上のもの」という意味になります。

rather than や more A than B は、2つの言い方・選択肢を比べて、どちらがより適切かを示します。

more than は「〜より多い」だけではない

more than は、後ろに数が来れば「〜より多い」です。

しかし、形容詞が来ると「非常に」、名詞が来ると「単なる〜以上」という意味になることがあります。文脈で品詞を見分けます。

more A than B は「BというよりA」

more A than B は、A と B のどちらがより当てはまるかを比べ、「BというよりA」を表します。

He is more cautious than cowardly. なら「彼は臆病というより慎重だ」です。A と B には形容詞・名詞・句などが入ります。

rather than は選択・対比を表す

rather than は「〜ではなく」「〜よりむしろ」を表します。

I chose tea rather than coffee. なら「コーヒーではなく紅茶を選んだ」です。

would rather A than B の形では「BするよりAしたい」を表します。

判別のコツ

other than / none other than

other than は「〜以外」を表します。

I told no one other than my parents. は「両親以外の誰にも話さなかった」という排他の意味です。

一方 none other than は「ほかならぬ〜だ」と特定して強調する表現で、別の働きをします（The man was none other than the king. ＝ その男はほかならぬ王だった）。

less than / no less than

less than は「〜未満」「〜ほどではない」を表します。

less than perfect は「完璧とは言えない」です。

一方、no less than は前の記事で見たように「〜も」という多さの強調です。

less があるから必ず少ない意味になるとは限りません。

prefer と比較表現

prefer は比較の意味を持つ動詞で、prefer A to B の形を取ります。

than ではなく to を使う点が重要です。

I prefer tea to coffee. は「コーヒーより紅茶が好き」です。

would rather A than B との形の違いも確認します。
