肯定文を受けた So do I. ／ and so did the second は「…もまた同様だ」。so の後ろが〈V ＋ S〉の倒置になります。fail のように意味が否定的でも、not などの否定語がなければ形式は肯定文なので、so を使います。

否定文を受けるときは Neither did he. ／ nor could she のように neither / nor ＋ 倒置で否定を重ねます。
