名詞節を作る接続詞

名詞節は、節全体が名詞の働きをする形です。

I think that he is right. の that he is right は、think の目的語です。

Whether he will come is uncertain. の whether he will come は主語です。

この記事では、that 節、whether / if 節、疑問詞節が、主語・目的語・補語・同格として働くしくみを整理します。

基本

名詞節の中心は、主語と動詞を含む節全体が名詞の位置に入ることです。

名詞は主語・目的語・補語になります。同じように、that S V、whether S V、what S V などの節も、文の中で名詞の働きをします。

副詞節との違いは、節が文の中心要素になっているかどうかです。

because S V や when S V は状況を足す副詞節になりやすい一方、that S V や whether S V は名詞の位置に入ります。

that 節は内容を表す

that S V は「S が V すること」という内容を表します。

I think that he is right. では、that he is right が think の目的語です。

目的語の that は省略されることがあります。

whether / if は「〜かどうか」

whether と if は、名詞節で「〜かどうか」を表します。

I do not know whether he will agree. は「彼が同意するかどうかわからない」です。目的語節では if もよく使われます。

疑問詞節は語順に注意する

what, where, when, why, how などが名詞節を作ることがあります。

I know where does he live. ではなく、I know where he lives. です。

間接疑問では、疑問文の語順ではなく、主語 + 動詞の語順になります。

判別のコツ

that 節は前置詞の直後に置きにくい

that 節は名詞節ですが、普通は前置詞の直後にそのまま置きにくいです。

I am sure of that he is honest. ではなく、I am sure that he is honest. または I am sure of the fact that he is honest. のようにします。

whether は if より使える範囲が広い

whether は主語・補語・前置詞の目的語・to 不定詞の前などで使いやすいです。

if は名詞節では主に目的語節で使います。

Whether to go is a difficult question. のように、whether to do の形も重要です。

同格の that 節

the fact, the news, the idea, the belief などの名詞の後ろに that 節が来ると、その名詞の内容を説明することがあります。

the news that he won the prize は「彼が賞を取ったという知らせ」です。

この that は関係代名詞ではなく、内容を導く接続詞です。
