導入

比較では、基本形を覚えていても、比較対象のずれや特殊な比較級で失点しやすくなります。

My score is higher than you. のような比較対象のずれ、superior than のような前置詞の誤り、the tallest of the two のような2者比較での最上級が典型です。

この記事では、比較の発展ポイントとして、比較対象の一致、ラテン比較級、2者のうちでより〜、older / elder / eldest などを整理します。

基本

比較の発展問題の中心は、表面的な訳語ではなく、構造と比較対象をそろえることです。

than の後ろに何を置くべきか、to を使う比較語なのか、2つのうちで比べているのか、範囲に本人が含まれるのかを確認します。

難しい比較問題ほど、比較級・最上級の形そのものより、比べているものの関係が問われます。

比較対象の一致を最優先で見る

比較では、A と B が同じ種類のものかを確認します。

The climate of Japan is milder than Canada. は、気候と国を比べています。

正しくは The climate of Japan is milder than that of Canada. です。

The quality of this product is better than that of the old one.
quality と quality を比べる。
Her answer was clearer than mine.
answer と answer を比べる。

ラテン比較級は to を使う

superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, preferable などは、比較の意味を持ちますが than ではなく to を使います。

This method is superior to the old one. のようにします。superior than は誤りです。

This material is superior to that one.
その素材より優れている。
Health is preferable to wealth.
富より健康のほうが望ましい。

2者のうちでより〜は the + 比較級

2つのうちでより〜な方を表すときは、the + 比較級 + of the two を使います。

She is the taller of the two sisters. は「2人姉妹のうち背が高い方」です。

2者なので tallest ではなく taller です。

This is the better of the two plans.
2つの案のうちよい方。
Ken is the older of the two brothers.
2人兄弟のうち年上の方。

判別のコツ

than I / than me / than I am

than の後ろの代名詞は、文体によって形が変わることがあります。

He is taller than I am. は構造が明確で、He is taller than I. はやや硬い形です。

日常的には He is taller than me. も広く使われます。試験では省略を補える than I am の形を基準にします。

She is more careful than I am.
than の後ろに I am を補う。
He knows more about history than I do.
do = know about history の代わり。

older / oldest と elder / eldest

older / oldest は、年齢や古さを一般的に比べる形です。than と一緒に使うときは older than が普通です。

elder / eldest は主に家族関係で名詞を前から説明するときに使われます。

my elder brother や the eldest son は自然ですが、He is elder than I am. は普通は He is older than I am. とします。

My elder sister lives in Kyoto.
家族内で年上の姉。
He is the eldest of the three children.
3人の子どもの中で最年長。
My sister is three years older than I am.
than と一緒なら older。

比較の中の代用表現

比較対象をそろえるために、that, those, one, ones, possessive の形がよく使われます。

that of は単数名詞、those of は複数名詞を受けます。

your bag の代わりに yours、that book の代わりに that one を使うこともあります。

The streets in Kyoto are narrower than those in Tokyo.
those = the streets。
This camera is more expensive than that one.
one = camera。

よくある間違い

間違い 1

誤りThis method is superior than that one.
正しくはThis method is superior to that one.
理由superior は than ではなく to を使います。

間違い 2

誤りShe is the tallest of the two sisters.
正しくはShe is the taller of the two sisters.
理由2者のうちでは最上級ではなく the + 比較級を使います。

間違い 3

誤りThe climate of Japan is milder than Canada.
正しくはThe climate of Japan is milder than that of Canada.
理由気候と国ではなく、気候と気候を比べます。

まとめ

比較の発展問題では、比較対象の一致、特殊な比較語、2者比較の形が狙われます。

than だけに反応せず、to を使う語、that of / those of、the better of the two、any other の必要性を確認しましょう。
