most / almost / most of の使い分け

導入

「ほとんどの人」を almost people と書くのは、入試でも英作文でも定番の誤りです。

正しくは most people、または almost all people。most と almost は品詞が違うため、使える場所が違います。

この記事では、most / most of / almost の使い分けを、品詞の観点から整理します。

基本

使い分けの土台は品詞です。

most は形容詞・代名詞として名詞につながりますが、almost は副詞なので名詞を直接修飾できません。

most + 名詞は「一般論」

most + 名詞（無冠詞）は、世の中一般について「ほとんどの〜」と言う形です。

Most people / most students のように、the を付けずに使います。

most of the + 名詞は「特定の集団」

most of の後ろには、the / these / my などで特定された名詞が来ます。

「（その）〜のほとんど」という意味で、話し手と聞き手が知っている集団について言う形です。

almost は副詞——all / every / 数値を修飾

almost は「ほとんど・もう少しで」という副詞なので、名詞を直接修飾できません。

almost all / almost every / almost 100 のように、形容詞や数値を修飾する形で使います。

判別のコツ

of の後ろには「限定」が必要

most of people は誤りで、most of the people が正しい形です。

of の後ろには the / these / my / them など、範囲を特定する語が必要です。代名詞なら most of them とします。

almost + 数値は OK

almost は数値の前に置いて「ほぼ〜」を表せます。

almost 100 people（ほぼ100人）、almost every day（ほとんど毎日）のように使います。

nearly との言い換え

almost は多くの場合 nearly に言い換えられます（almost all ≒ nearly all）。

ただし almost never（めったに〜ない）のような否定語との組み合わせは almost を使うのが普通です。
