指示代名詞は this, that, these, those のように、人・物・内容を指し示す語です。

this は近い単数、that は遠い単数、these は近い複数、those は遠い複数を表します。

基本

指示代名詞の中心は、話し手から見た距離と、文脈上の近さを表すことです。

this book は手元の本、that book は離れた本を指します。

時間では this morning が現在に近い朝、those days が過去の遠い日々を表します。

また、this はこれから述べる内容、that は前に述べた内容を受けやすいという文章の流れの上での違いもあります。

this は近い単数、that は遠い単数を表します。

This is my bag. は手元にあるか、話題として近いものを指します。

That is my bag. は少し離れたものや、心理的に距離のあるものを指します。

these / those は複数

these は近い複数、those は遠い複数を表します。

these books は近くの本たち、those books は遠くの本たちです。those は「人々」を表す名詞的な働きでもよく使われます。

名詞の前で形容詞のようにも使う

this / that / these / those は、名詞の前に置いて名詞を限定することもできます。

this book, that idea, these students, those days のように使います。この場合、名詞の単数・複数に合わせます。

判別のコツ

this はこれから、that は前の内容

文脈では、this はこれから述べる内容を指し、that は前に述べた内容を受けることがあります。

Remember this: practice is important. では、この後に来る内容を this が示しています。

He failed the exam. That surprised us. では、前文全体を that が受けています。

電話・紹介での this / that

電話では、自分を名乗るとき This is …、相手を尋ねるとき Is that …? を使うことがあります。

This is Ken speaking. は「ケンです」です。日本語の「こちら」「そちら」に近い感覚で考えると分かりやすいです。

those who と比較の those

those who … は「〜する人々」を表します。

また、比較では those of … が前の複数名詞を受けます。

The rules of this school are stricter than those of that school. の those は rules です。
