強調構文 It is … that は、文の一部を取り出して強く示す構文です。

It was Ken that broke the window. は「窓を割ったのはケンだった」という意味です。

この記事では、強調構文の作り方、強調できる要素、It is / was と that の外し方、形式主語構文や関係代名詞との違いを整理します。

基本

強調構文の中心は、It is / was A that … の A を強調することです。

元の文 Ken broke the window. から Ken を取り出すと、It was Ken that broke the window. になります。

yesterday を強調すれば It was yesterday that Ken broke the window. です。

見抜くコツは、It is / was と that を外して、残った語を元の位置に戻したときに自然な文になるかを確認することです。

人 Tom helped me. It was Tom who helped me. 人では who も使える

It is / was A that … の形

強調構文は、It is / was A that … の形で、A を強調します。

現在の内容なら is、過去の内容なら was が使われることが多いです。A には主語・目的語・副詞句などが入ります。

It was Mary that found the key.
Mary を強調。
It was the key that Mary found.
the key を強調。
It was in the kitchen that Mary found the key.
in the kitchen を強調。

It is / was と that を外して確認する

強調構文かどうかは、It is / was と that を外して元の文が作れるかで確認します。

It was yesterday that I called him. は I called him yesterday. に戻せます。

これができれば強調構文と判断しやすいです。

It is this book that I want to read.
I want to read this book. に戻せます。
It was because he was sick that he stayed home.
He stayed home because he was sick. に戻せます。

人では who も使える

強調される語が人の場合、that の代わりに who を使うことがあります。

It was Tom who broke the window. は自然です。ただし、受験では that で広く処理できることも押さえます。

It was my sister who called you.
my sister を強調。
It was my sister that called you.
that でも表せます。

判別のコツ

形式主語構文との違い

It is important that you study every day. は強調構文ではなく形式主語構文です。

It is と that を外すと You study every day important. のようになり、自然な文には戻せません。

It is A that … に見えても、A が形容詞で that 節が真主語なら形式主語構文です。

It is clear that he is honest.
形式主語構文。that 節が内容です。
It was his honesty that impressed us.
強調構文。His honesty impressed us. に戻せます。

関係代名詞との違い

It was the book that I bought yesterday. は、強調構文にも見えますが、文脈によっては関係代名詞 that が the book を説明しているだけの文にも見えます。

強調構文なら I bought the book yesterday. に戻せます。

関係詞なら the book that I bought yesterday という名詞句が補語になっています。

It was this rule that many students forgot.
Many students forgot this rule. に戻せる強調構文。
This is the rule that many students forgot.
関係代名詞 that が rule を説明。

not … but … と組み合わせる

強調構文は、not A but B と組み合わせて「A ではなく B だ」を強調することがあります。

It was not Ken but Mary that solved the problem. は「問題を解いたのはケンではなくメアリーだった」です。

It was not yesterday but today that I met him.
昨日ではなく今日。
It is not money but time that we need most.
最も必要なのはお金ではなく時間。

よくある間違い

間違い 1

誤りIt was Tom that he broke the window.
正しくはIt was Tom that broke the window.
理由Tom が主語なので he を重ねません。

間違い 2

誤りIt was in Kyoto where I met her.
正しくはIt was in Kyoto that I met her.
理由前置詞句 in Kyoto を強調する形では where は使えません。that を使います。

間違い 3

誤りIt is important that study every day.
正しくはIt is important that you study every day.
理由これは形式主語構文で、that 節には主語が必要です。

まとめ

強調構文 It is / was A that … は、文の一部 A を強調する構文です。

It is / was と that を外して元の文に戻せるかを確認すると、形式主語構文や関係詞との違いが見えます。
