同格は、前の名詞を後ろの語句や節が言い換えたり、内容を説明したりする構文です。
Ken, my best friend, helped me. の my best friend は Ken の同格です。
the fact that he passed の that he passed は fact の内容です。

基本
同格の中心は、A = B の関係です。
Ken, my best friend, なら Ken = my best friend です。
the news that he won the prize なら、that he won the prize が news の内容を説明しています。
同格は、文の主語・動詞の骨格とは別に、名詞を詳しく説明する働きをします。読解では、同格部分を一度かっこに入れて処理すると読みやすくなります。

名詞の言い換え
名詞の後ろに別の名詞句を置き、前の名詞を言い換えることがあります。
Mr. Sato, our English teacher, is very kind. では our English teacher が Mr. Sato を説明しています。
同格の that 節
fact, news, idea, belief, hope, possibility, evidence などの名詞の後ろに that 節が来て、その名詞の内容を説明することがあります。
the fact that he was honest は「彼が正直だったという事実」です。that 節は fact の内容です。
同格の of
the city of Kyoto, the month of May のように、of が同格的に働くことがあります。
the city of Kyoto は「京都という都市」で、Kyoto が city の内容を具体化しています。
判別のコツ
同格の that と関係代名詞 that
同格の that は、後ろの節が前の名詞の内容を説明します。
関係代名詞 that は、後ろの節の中で主語・目的語などの役割を持ち、前の名詞を修飾します。
the news that he told me では that は told の目的語で関係代名詞です。
同格の that は省略しにくい
目的語の that 節では that が省略されることがありますが、同格の that は省略しにくいです。
the fact he came より the fact that he came が明確です。特に学習段階では that を残して構造を示すのが安全です。
同格部分を外して骨格を見る
同格部分は名詞の補足説明なので、一度外すと文の骨格が見えます。
The fact that he failed the exam surprised us. では、主語は The fact that he failed the exam 全体ですが、中心は The fact です。
