最上級の基本

最上級は、ある範囲の中で「最も〜」を表す形です。

This is the most interesting book in the library. なら、図書館にある本の中で一番面白いという意味です。

この記事では、the -est / the most の基本、in / of / among の範囲表現、one of the 最上級、序数 + 最上級を整理します。

基本

最上級の中心は、範囲の中で一番を決めることです。

最上級では、何の中で一番なのかが大切です。

in the world, of the five, among the students のような表現で範囲を示します。

また、最上級は単に the best と覚えるだけでは足りません。

one of the best students のように複数名詞を続ける形、the second largest city のように順位を表す形もよく出ます。

最上級には範囲が必要

最上級は、範囲の中で一番を表します。

He is the tallest. だけでも文脈上は通じますが、入試では in his class, of the three, among us のように範囲を表す語句がよく問われます。

in / of / among の使い分け

in は場所・集団・範囲、of は複数のものや数、among は集団の中を表すときによく使います。

the tallest in the class、the best of all、the most popular among teenagers のように、後ろに来る語の性質で選びます。

one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞

one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞 は「最も〜なものの1つ」を表します。

one of の後ろは複数の集合が来るので、one of the best student ではなく one of the best students です。

判別のコツ

序数 + 最上級

the second largest, the third most important のように、序数を最上級の前に置くと「何番目に〜」を表します。

Tokyo is the most populous city in Japan. Osaka is the third most populous city. のように、順位を表す読解でよく使われます。

ever と最上級

現在完了と ever を組み合わせると、「今まで〜した中で最も」という意味になります。

This is the best book I have ever read. は、I have ever read が book を説明し、「私が今まで読んだ中で最高の本」です。

副詞の最上級では the が省略されることがある

形容詞が名詞を説明する最上級では the が必要です。一方、副詞の最上級では the が省略されることがあります。

He runs fastest in his class. の fastest は runs を説明する副詞です。

ただし、学校文法では the fastest もよく見ます。名詞を説明しているのか、動詞を説明しているのかを確認します。
